Reception - Little Owls

A very warm welcome to Little Owls! Mrs Gill is the class teacher.

Little Owls Class is a place where children can learn through a mix of child initiated and adult led approaches.

We aim to ensure that the learning that takes place in Little Owls Class and the atmosphere created provides the children with a positive first experience of school.
Even from the earliest stages of school, we support our children in becoming resilient, independent lifelong learners.

We have PE on a Tuesday and the children can come into school wearing their PE kit on that day.

Communication between school and home is of the highest importance to us.  We share some of our news and information via Class Dojo, where you can receive weekly updates and photos of our weekly activities straight to your phone.  For any help connecting and using the app, please see the link below or get in touch.

EYFS Long Term Plan

EYFS Curriculum

The below document 'What to expect when' is a great document to show what your child should be demonstrating in the EYFS. Of course all children are different and progress at different rates, but the guide will explain what we will be supporting your child to demonstrate through 40-60 months.

We aim for children to achieve an Early Learning Goal at the end of their year in Reception and these are explained too.

There are only a few pages and they are well worth a look as they give you ideas of what to do and look for at home. If you notice your child doing any of the things listed, then please send in a note, photo or wow star and we will add it to their profile!

Supporting Your Child with Reading

Although your child will be taught to read at school, you can have a huge impact on their reading journey by continuing their practice at home.

There are two types of reading book that your child may bring home:

  • A reading practice book. This will be at the correct phonic stage for your child. They should be able to read this fluently and independently.
  • A sharing book. Your child will not be able to read this on their own. This book is for you both to read and enjoy together.

Reading Practice Book

This book has been carefully matched to your child’s current reading level. If your child is reading it with little help, please don’t worry that it’s too easy – your child needs to develop fluency and confidence in reading.

Listen to them read the book. Remember to give them lots of praise – celebrate their success! If they can’t read a word, read it to them. After they have finished, talk about the book together.

Sharing Book

In order to encourage your child to become a lifelong reader, it is important that they learn to read for pleasure. The sharing book is a book they have chosen for you to enjoy together.

Please remember that you shouldn’t expect your child to read this alone. Read it to or with them. Discuss the pictures, enjoy the story, predict what might happen next, use different voices for the characters, explore the facts in a non-fiction book. The main thing is that you have fun!
