Year 1 - Snowy Owls

Welcome to Year 1- Class teacher - Mrs Holt.

If you need to contact me, I will usually be available at the end of the day or you can email me at office@peakirk.peterborough.sch.uk

I am looking forward to working with you all.

Our PE days are Tuesday and Thursday and children can come to school in their PE kits.

Communication between school and home is of the highest importance to us.  We share some of our news and information via Class Dojo, where you can receive weekly updates and photos of our weekly activities straight to your phone.  For any help connecting and using the app, please see the link below or get in touch.

Curriculum Overview

 Home Learning

The following homework is the minimum weekly expectation to help your child's learning and progression in school. Most of these are easy to access platforms. Staff can monitor if children have logged on and how much time they have completed.

Tackling Tables - Addition and Subtraction

Your child has a login and we expect that they will play the games and/or complete their timed practice at least three times a week. Your child's login has been sent home.

 Reading and Spelling

We continue the Little Wandle program started in EYFS.  Your child will continue to to bring a reading book home to read once per week, which is phonetically decodable and a book you can share with them for pleasure. Spellings are taught with the program in school.  However, we will inform you of the sounds being taught each week and have further information on our phonics page, such as how to articulate the sounds.  The sounds and words taught each week can be located on the tab below.  There is a Year 1 common exception word list of words children should be able to read and spell by the end of Year 1 and this is available below to help support your child with reading and spelling them at home.

Supporting Your Child with Reading

Although your child will be taught to read at school, you can have a huge impact on their reading journey by continuing their practice at home.

There are two types of reading book that your child may bring home:

  • A reading practice book. This will be at the correct phonic stage for your child. They should be able to read this fluently and independently.
  • A sharing book. Your child will not be able to read this on their own. This book is for you both to read and enjoy together.

Reading Practice Book

This book has been carefully matched to your child’s current reading level. If your child is reading it with little help, please don’t worry that it’s too easy – your child needs to develop fluency and confidence in reading.

Listen to them read the book. Remember to give them lots of praise – celebrate their success! If they can’t read a word, read it to them. After they have finished, talk about the book together.

Sharing Book

In order to encourage your child to become a lifelong reader, it is important that they learn to read for pleasure. The sharing book is a book they have chosen for you to enjoy together.

Please remember that you shouldn’t expect your child to read this alone. Read it to or with them. Discuss the pictures, enjoy the story, predict what might happen next, use different voices for the characters, explore the facts in a non-fiction book. The main thing is that you have fun!
